The Essential Scanning System
GE introduced a tangential firing system in 1927. We injected fuel and air through a wind box from the corner of the furnace, aimed at tangling with an imaginary circle in the center of the furnace. This creates a single rotating fire envelope (vortex) that produces uniform and consistent heat profiles on the furnace wall above the operating load range. Because of aerodynamics, fuel and air are mixed throughout the furnace, resulting in high efficiency combustion. For the design of two-roof boilers and towers, the tangential firing also provides:
- Low primary NOx emissions to decrease SCR catalyst volume, use of reagents, and maintenance requirements
- Efficient use of furnace volume, resulting in reduced slagging tendencies and frequency of hepi- blows
- Excellent fire stability for increased unit turndown and wider latitude for fuel variation
- Capability so no trial to control the reheating temperature

GE ultra-supercritical boilers contribute to a 42 to 45% cycle efficiency based on HHV (LHV base 44 to 47%). This significantly reduces fuel and emissions control costs for our customers.

To date, GE has directly supplied more than 116,000 MW of supercritical / ultra-supercritical boilers worldwide, and has licensed and trained other companies to install an additional 140,000 MW.
